Associate Professor Matthew Morgan's major specialist interest is minimally invasive surgery for patients with colorectal conditions.

He has been practicing laparoscopic (or key-hole) colorectal surgery since 1999.

He was a major Sydney contributor  to the only multi-center randomised trial of laparoscopic surgery for colon cancer (the Australasian laparoscopic surgery for colon cancer trial, ALCCaS).

He is a major Australian contributor to the only multi-centre randomised trial of laparoscopic surgery for rectal cancer (the Australasian laparoscopic surgery for cancer of the rectum trial, A La CaRT).

The laparoscopic surgical approach also benefits patients requiring surgery for other conditions such as inflammatory bowel disease (Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis), diverticular disease and funtional problems such as rectal prolapse.

Since 2000 he has worked with patients with complex endometriosis involving the bowel (colon or rectum) in conjunction with gynaecologists experienced in dealing with patients with this complex problem. He is a strong advocate for a minimally invasive approach, including those patients who require a bowel resection as part of their treatrment for endometriosis-related pain or infertility.

He is currently extending the minimally invasive approach by using the Da Vinci robot which adds 3D vision and more precision in more complex surgical procedures.
