About Me

A/Prof Morgan is a highly experience colorectal surgeon with 25+ years of surgical experience working across South-West and Southern Sydney. He has a significant interest in surgical research and surgical techniques.

He was a major contributor to the only multi-centre randomised trial of laparoscopic surgery for colon cancer (the Australasian laparoscopic surgery for colon cancer trial, ALCCaS), which compared two different surgical approaches (laparoscopic vs. open surgery) both in terms of short-term and long-term outcomes. Laparoscopic surgery has a superior short-term benefit for patients. He is a contributor to the current multi-centre RCT of laparoscopic surgery for rectal cancer (A La CaRT) and is a strong advocate of the benefits of laparoscopic surgery which include faster recovery and lower morbidity.

The laparoscopic surgical approach also benefits patients requiring surgery for other conditions such as inflammatory bowel disease (Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis), diverticular disease and functional problems such as rectal prolapse.

Since 2000, A/Prof Morgan has worked with patients with complex endometriosis involving the bowel (colon or rectum) in conjunction with gynaecologists experienced in dealing with patients with this complex problem. He is a strong advocate for a minimally invasive approach (laparoscopy), including those patients who require a bowel resection as part of their treatment for endometriosis-related pain or infertility.

He is currently extending the minimally invasive approach by using the Da Vinci robot which adds 3D vision and more precision in more complex surgical procedures.
